January, 2007: LionsRC Races at Beach Sprints
Eleven members of the Lions Rowing Club competed at the Long Beach Erg Sprints on Saturday. The indoor rowing competition, hosted by the Long Beach Rowing Association, is a satellite qualifier for the CRASH-B indoor rowing World Championships. Competitors race over a distance of 2000 meters on the Concept 2 "ergometer," an indoor rowing machine.

LionsRC members raced to first place finishes in three events. In the Veteran Men's race, for ages 65-69, Kaleb Nelson brought home the gold medal with a time of 7:20.0. He will travel to Boston in February to race at the World Championships. Erika Anderson raced to a first place finish in the Master's Lightweight Women's category, over 30 seconds ahead of second place, with a time of 8:26.3. In the Open Women's race, LionsRC members filled the top three spots, with a very close race between first and second. Shelle Orem placed first with a time of 7:14.3 with teammate Iva Boteva .7 seconds behind her, and teammate Kathy Hein in third.

Notable second place finishes went to LionsRC Coach Tony Gjessing in the Master's Lightweight Men's race and Kersten Valentine-Rothenberg in the Master's Women's race.

The Lions Rowing Club will compete next at the Long Beach Spring Regatta on Sunday, March 18th.
