February, 2006: Lions Rowing Club hosts first sculling workshop
LionsRC played host this weekend to its first annual sculling camp. Ten participants joined the three-day event, which offered on-the-water instruction, video analysis and presentations on rowing-related topics given by local coaches and rowers. WinTech Racing supplied a number of doubles and singles for use over the weekend.

The camp opened on Saturday with an erg presentation given by LionsRC coach and Junior World Record Holder on the Concept II, Ivelina Boteva. Campers then enjoyed a real-time video analysis of their rowing technique before going out on the water for their first row. Loyola Marymount University Assistant Coach Sara-Mai Conway began the rowing video analysis session with a talk on Self-Awareness and the practice of visualization, and LMU Head Coach Patrick Kelly followed up with video analysis of the morning row. All of the campers used this information to improve greatly during the post-lunch row.

Sunday's double row was preceded by LionsRC Head Coach Guillermo Lemus' talk on Water Workouts where campers learned about the use of different training zones. The row was then followed by a presentation on Injury Prevention and Nutrition by rower and chiropractor Dr. Dominic Scott of Life Chiropractic. Campers enjoyed seeing a plastic spinal cord utilized to demonstrate both good and bad technique on the erg.

Craig Leeds of the California Yacht Club, a frequent gold medalist at the Head of the Charles, kicked off the Monday session with a presentation on goal setting. Craig used his own training plan for the HOCR as an example of what one can accomplish when consistently training with a personalized plan and a clear long-term goal. Campers then went out for one final row in the California sunshine.

The Lions Rowing Club looks forward to hosting the event again next year - offering a fun and educational way to break up the winter training and get back out on the water.
